Tax season is ramping up. Yay. (Yah, that was sarcasm.)
I’m actually proud of myself for having gotten all my paperwork for our personal taxes and both corporations over to my accountant early this year. They can take it from there. I’ve done what I’m supposed to do, and handed it off to the experts to deal with. I thought I was done, except for the signature part. Easy peasy.
Instead, they sent me a long list of things back that I needed to do. Fill this form out. Send money here, make sure the memo says that. Go to a website and do something else. A whole list of things and terms that I don’t understand and don’t care to understand.
So what happened next? My brain shut down. I just look at the forms, all the other convoluted stuff (to me anyway) that I have to do, and I just shut off. I hate taxes. I absolutely, utterly hate everything about it.
Now, I’m a reasonably intelligent person. I’m no slouch when it comes to technology. I can fix computers, websites, and all sorts of electronic mishmash. I can speak intelligently with mechanics, doctors, attorneys, and ask questions that make sense. Taxes? It just turns my brain to an utter quivering pile of mush. Bleah. I just want someone to give me step-by-step instructions and tell me exactly what to do. I’m a big baby about taxes like that. It’s not even the paying part that bothers me so much (well it does, but that’s not really my pain point). It’s the process of getting everything all lined up right. I just hate it because I don’t really understand it all.
Is Your Brain Mushy When It Comes to SEO?
It occurred to me that business owners probably have a similar reaction to online marketing. Call it SEO, internet marketing, attraction marketing, whatever. Maybe your brain turns to mush too, your eyes roll back in your head, and just a little drool comes out of the corner of your mouth. I’m sure some of you have the same shut down that I have around taxes. You know you have to do the online marketing thing, but because it’s too big and overwhelming, you just don’t know where to even start. Keyword research? Title tags? Link juice? Google authorship? What is all that stuff really, who the hell cares, and how is it relevant to my business anyway?
I mentioned this before. Just take a deep breath and forget all about that. It doesn’t really matter all that much, and it’s easy to get so buried down in the weeds that you have to try hack your way out with a machete.
You are in business because (hopefully) you love what you DO for your business. Whether you’re a mechanic, coach, photographer, DJ, religious leader, caterer, accountant, lawyer or any of 1000 other things, you do it because you like doing it. The last thing you want to do is fiddle with all the geekery on your website, right? Let’s just do this thang and get it over with, kind of like taxes.
I’ve heard your cry, and hopefully we can work together to get all the pieces lined up without much angst. Walk with me as we take these steps together, and I’ll show you what you as business owner can do without much effort (or time or money!) and get results. Want to play?
Comment below and tell me where your brain shuts off. What are the terms or “things” that make your eyes glaze over when someone says you have to do “x” on your website “or else be banished to Google’s Pit of Despair”? Go ahead, hit me.
